Engineer style lanterns are most commonly made with tall tapered globes and un-guarded frames.

This lantern looks to have been special made or field modified to be taller.
Circa 1850-60s

Two lower body pieces soldered and crimped together with an oversized skirt putting this lantern at 13in tall and 17in to top of bail.
Fount is also tall to accommodate the larger lower body , using a Brass No.1 Callender burner ( marked E. Miller & Co.)
Might of started as a whale oil burner and later replaced when kero became the more popular fuel choice.

Condition - very good for its age, all original.
No visible damage, or loose solder, or plaster.
Fount is snug and clean.
No heavy rusting or pitting present.
Traces of its original black japanning still.
